Mit Mary, der Verwalterin des American Heritage Campground, hat mich die USA sehr herzlich begruesst. Weil ich um 20:30h hier ankam. auch hier die Restaurants um 21:00h schliessen, habe ich mich mit Chips versorgt. Bier durfte sie mir nicht verkaufen, darum schenkte sie mir 2 Flaschen, einschliesslich Eis zum kuehlen. Ist das nicht cool?

Arrived a campground near Olympia, the Washington state capital. Mary, the camp ranger welcomed me heartly. As she had no licence she offered me 2 bottles of her own beer as a present, ice included. Cool, isn't it?

Von Ucluelet nach Tofino, vorbei an wellenreichen, langen, weissen Stränden. Ein Surferparadies. Tofino ist ein Ausgangspunkt zum Whale Watching, sowie DAS Wassersportzentrum auf Vancouver Island. Überhaupt Sport: Bis auf Sommer-Skifahren geht auf dieser Insel alles. Sie ist -bis auf die nicht vorhandenen Gletscher- eine kleine Abbildung Kanadas. Wer nur wenig Zeit hat, aber viel Kanada sehen will, sollte sich hier umsehen, dann hat er fast alles gesehen / getan was in Kanada möglich ist.
Dann wieder zurück, quer über die Insel, über Qualicum Beach nach Victoria.

Tofino via Qualicum Beach to Victoria. Tofino is the very touristic center of whale watching tours and of all kind of water sports. Vancouver Island provides all kind of sports and recreation activities except of clacier skiing. This Island is a little copy of Canada (my impression, not read in tourist guides!).

Übernachtung in Port Hardy.
Die Fahrt von Port Hardy entlang der Ostküste mit landschaftlich reizvoller Aussicht auf das Meer links und die Kopie der kanadischen Wald- und Seenlandschaft rechts, fliehenden Baer eingeschlossen, bis nach Qualicum Beach,

von dort in Richtung Tofino an der Westküste ist jedem Motorradfahrer nur zu empfehlen. 1996 war die Strasse noch eine Schotterstrecke. Nun aber ist sie durchgaengig asphaltiert. Ab Port Alberni ist sie -in jeder Beziehung- noch abwechslungsreicher als jene in Yukon und Alaska. Sehr viel engere Kurven als dort, teilweise durch wildromantische Schluchten.
Weil sowohl die Campingplaetze als auch die Restaurants um 21:00 h schliessen, bzw. keine Bestellungen mehr annehmen (also die Buergersteige hoch geklappt werden), war in Ucluelet der Reisetag zu Ende. Ucluelet ist eine kleine Hafenstadt mit indianischer Praegung der schoenen Art.
Mein eigentliches Tagesziel -Tofino werde ich morgen erreichen.

The road along the Vancouver Island east coast and later from Qualicum Beach to Tofino is to be recommended strongly to each motor biker. It's even more delightful (to me) then the Alaska Highway in Yukon and Alaka.Very bendy, ups and downs, along several lakes, through narrow and high canyons. Very scenic. As at 9 pm both the campgrounds and the restaurants are closed, the lights dimmed and the boardwalks put upright I had to stop in Ucluelet. A nice little harbor village influenced by the local indian tribe. They try to revive their first nation culture. Good luck with that, guys.
